Late Summer Fun

Though our new backyard is not entirely fenced in, there is enough to keep Lucy reasonably contained for some outdoor fun. And since it is still mid-summer-Maine warm here, we've been spending a lot of time outside at the park and doing super fun stuff in our yard like bubbles.

In addition to the bubble machine, Lucy is also working on her use of the wand "Self". Very tricky.

(the forgotten) Fort Knox Trip

Seems like forever ago but Eric, Lucy & I went to Bucksport/Fort Knox for our big 5th anniversary getaway. With the impending move, even the 5-hour excursion seemed extravagant, but I had wanted to do one last trip to the coast(ish) before we moved to the heartland. Plus I've been excited about going up the Penobscot narrows observatory since it opened.

Here we are, ready to roll.

Hmmm, deadly weapon of destruction or toddler seat?

The camera flash doesn't really account for how dark it was in the tunnels around the fort. The website recommends bringing a flashlight for exploration but we forgot. I think the darkness is reflected in the fact that Lucy is actually walking with me and holding my hand. Normally this does not happen.

It's funny, but both of the times I've been to Fort Knox there have been historical re-enactments happening. It's funny to see the civil-war era tents, wagons, and dress complemented by plastic water bottles and sneakers.

Lucy is likely getting some lesson here. Fishing practices? Tide patterns? Coastal vegetation?

Here we are, at the new Penobscot Narrows Bridge. For anyone who has not been up to the top, the four dollar admission to Fort Knox is well worth the view. I thought it was going to be a little scarier at the top, but it was more dizzying standing at the base and looking straight up. It's something like a 425-foot tall elevator shaft with a glass observatory at the top. We could see for miles on the beautiful clear day we were there.

Lucy was not at all unnerved by the height. She climbed all over the metal rails and into and around the stairwell. I'm not sure if this was bravery or ignorance.

The view down the river into Penobscot Bay.

A side note to our last summer in Maine, but one I'm glad we'll have the memories of.
